Travel Tips
Excess Luggage and Sporting Gear
It is essential if bringing any kind of sporting gear including surf boards, dive tanks and equipment, surf, kite or wind surfing boards and fishing rods and tackle, to advise your consultant prior to departure. Each airline must be advised prior to departure of any possible unusual and heavy items. Please note all excess luggage and unusual items are NOT GUARANTEEED to travel. It may be necessary to delivery unusual items and excess luggage to the airport a few weeks prior to departure to ensure they are available on island when passengers arrive.
Flight Reservations
Flight reservations do book out especially for travel from Perth and during holiday periods. To ensure seating confirmation on your preferred dates, we recommend booking 2-3 months in advance and up to 6 months in advance during all holidays especially June – August as this is the wind surfing season on the Cocos Islands. Availability can be obtained from your Island Explorer Holidays representative.
Frequent Flyers
Qantas Frequent Flyers points can be accrued on National Jet flights to the Cocos and Christmas Islands, except for package reservations. In order to accrue points, please advise your consultant with your frequent flyer number prior to departure. Qantas frequent flyers points can also be used for travel however only 2 seats per flight are released and booking usually 6-11 months in advance is recommended. Confirming Frequent Flyer seats can only be done through Qantas Frequent Flyers and not Island Explorer Holidays.
Car Hire and Tours
All visitors to Christmas Island will require some kind of transport to see the many sights available. It is common for tours and especially 4WD’s to be booked out, to avoid disappointment, pre-booking of car hire and tours is essential.
Transfers
Accommodation property’s on Cocos Islands provide free transfers as many of the properties are with in walking distance from the airport. All visitors to Christmas Island will require airport transfers unless they are pre-booking a car or 4WD. Taxi’s are available but also require pre-booking and are usually the same price as transfers with the accommodation provider. Check with your consultant that transfers have been included in your package.
Food
If traveling from Perth Australia, to either Christmas or the Cocos Islands it is possible to bring food purchased through any local supermarket. We recommend those traveling to especially Cocos Islands to bring your own meat, fruit, vegetables and cheeses. Due to the altitude of the aircraft ice is not essential for keeping goods chilled and ice is not acceptable. Christmas Island is fortunate to have a few supermarkets offering a range of goods for sale and also has a number of restaurants to choose from. The Cocos Islands is limited with dining options hence food is part of our recommendations to ensure the most enjoyable holiday.
